Pu-erh Black Tea

Tasting Notes: Earthy, Rich, and Musky

How would you describe Pu-erh? Well, it’s a post-fermented, aged black tea that comes to us from southern China. The aging process for Pu-erh makes for a smoother and more complex cup of black tea. The thick, musky infusion produces an aroma that’s earthy and oh-so-subtle in its sweetness.  While the infusion is complex, brisk, and overtly bold, it also has a surprisingly silky-smooth mouthfeel. And, while it has every right to be bitter, we don’t sense any bitterness in this tea whatsoever.

Savoring the Experience:

Pu-erh is considered to have digestive benefits and is often served with a large stir-fry or a meat-based meal. For something a bit lighter, consider pairing it with Manchego cheese on some artisan-style bread.

Fun Facts:

Our Pu-erh tea is loose-leaf, but Pu-erh is often presented in round, flat cakes. Originally, pressing tea leaves into flat cakes or “bricks” made the tea easier to transport either on ships or on the backs of horses. Their compressed shape was also more space efficient and easier to store during the aging process.
